  1. Joey Franklin was an acquaintance of mine when we were both at Ohio University a few years ago I didn t know him well, but what I did know told me that he was a really clean cut and well adjusted guy So when I heard that he was publishing a book of autobiographical essays, I was intrigued So often it seems like you need to have had an extraordinarily dramatic life to get this kind of book published, and a normal person like him or like me stands very little chance of actually getting their work [...]

  2. I really enjoyed this collection After assigning the essay about working at Wendy s to my students, I figured I should read his other essays I had, I think, only two critiques and otherwise really enjoyed it.

  3. Sounds like a marriage self help book, but instead is a collage of essays on random topics Grand Theft Auto, Ohio Edition was my favorite which depicts Franklin s maroon Ford Escort, with a dangling bumper and two car seats, being stolen and the hypothetical story behind someone that desperate Joey feels like the kind you d enjoy having over for Sunday dinner, but you d wonder what his spin would be if he wrote about that.

  4. Why did I, a person of the female persuasion, decide to read this collection of essays ostensibly aimed at men I don t know, but I m glad I did The writing was in turn lyrical, provocative, and chuckle worthy.

  5. A wonderful collection of essays, and I suppose I expected no less from Joey Franklin My favorite, On Haptics, Hyperrealism, and My Father s Year in Prison , is interwoven in surprising ways that pushed me to consider connection and touch in ways I had not before.

  6. Of these essays, Lifespan of a Kiss is among the funniest My Hair Piece could only be written by a man with a sense of humor The essay that won awards from this collection is called Working at Wendy s , and while it contains elements of humor, there is something beautiful about the writer s emphasis on supporting someone else s dream for a season My favorite might have been the title essay, which explores how hyperbole, storytelling, and choice work in love Although, to be fair, Houseguests , an [...]

  7. I read this book to my husband as we were traveling for the holidays The essays made a good accompaniment to the trip and were fodder for many interesting conversations That s a sign of a good book for me, it lives outside its covers The essays are well crafted and interesting I have to admit that I was expecting a little scandal with a title like that, but I guess scandal is in the eye of the beholder.

  8. Just Finished My Wife Wants You to Know I m Happily Married by Joey Franklin, a series of enjoyable and tender essays about first kisses, parenting, Boy Scout hikes, male pattern balding and cockroaches.

  9. A collection of short stories essays about a man in his thirties examining events in his life.It provides some thought provoking moments.A good reflection on people and things probably most men deal with in the process of growing up.

  10. I reviewed this set of essays for the Deseret News In short, sometimes they felt a little self absorbed but I liked some of them.

  11. I enjoyed this collection of personal narratives, particularly its exploration of how we understand ourselves and other people My favorite essays were the title essay and On Haptics, Hyperrealism, and My Father s Year in Prison.

  12. Silly, humorous, thoughtful I started reading this thinking it would be a light humor book, but it turned out to be slightly deeper than that It does have humor, and would never be mistaken for a philosophy textbook, but I think it is just a collection of personal life lessons.

  13. Enjoyable and thought provoking series of essays on a variety of subjects some funny, some reflective Well written and engaging insights on not only the author s experiences but our own as well.
