  1. I had never heard of the Hiccup Girl but apparently she was a big deal when she was about 14 years old She appeared on television and newspapers for a while She had the hiccups for several months and when they suddenly went away her 15 minutes of fame was over After that it was all downhill The book raises the question Did her fleeting fame have anything to do with her problems afterwards The front cover tells us that she was later convicted of murder.

  2. I won this book from one of the GoodReads giveaways I was excited to start this book I remembered seeing this young girl on tv when she had the hiccups and was curious about how she ended up in jail It s an interesting story The book gives great insight and details of the story however, it s very repetitive Yes, I understand people thought she was faking How many times do you need to say it Anyway, I felt like it dragged on a little bit Could have wrapped it up about 100 pages less Good story th [...]

  3. What a great read M William Phelps does not disappoint with this account of the hiccup girl Jennifer Mee who ends up setting up someone she met online to get robbed by her gangster friends and things go horribly wrong Jennifer Mee had a low IQ and learning disabilities combined with a dysfunctional home life and poor supervision which contributed to the wrong choices she made in life This book was well researched and is well written I highly recommend this book.

  4. I tried but Jennifer Hiccup Girl Mee s mother started getting on my nerves insisting on Jennifer s naivety and lack of smarts When she got to the lead homocide detective s supposed vendetta against her daughter, which is extremely ridiculous and unbelievable, I just couldn t take it any I feel for her but she needs to face facts about her daughter she ain t that stupid.

  5. Normally I really enjoy this author s books, but man, this one dragged Not to take away from the victim or his family, what was a horrific and needless murder, but I think I just found the main perpetrator extremely boring It was a definite fight to get through this one.

  6. I love M William Phelps books, I really really do I am obsessed. This book was absolutely 100% mind blowing and super strange The story kind of dragged on in certain places but it was a good book overall.Jennifer Mee is known as the hiccup girl When she was 15 years old, she developed hiccups that wouldn t stop She went from doctor to doctor and nobody could figure out what was wrong with her She was put on medications that made her like a zombie and she suffered with hiccups for weeks She couldn [...]

  7. A book about a teenager Jennifer Mee, who gains notoriety because of a strange and curious condition where she had intractable hiccups for weeks and weeks She becomes a sort of instant celebrity on social media when her mom goes looking for help for her and they both have a couple of appearances on the Today show The story kind of kicks up after she is arrested a year or so later after the hiccups finally have stopped The family gets a phone call from Jennifer in jail, telling them she s been ar [...]

  8. I rarely give five starsbut this was a most unusual case I d never heard of the hiccup girl and after having read this extremely well covered case by Phelps, I m still stunned I totally agree and love the way Phelps calls them as he sees them The truth about pop reality stars, the media and the ridiculous way our society today makes news out of nothing, thereby instilling in our youth the least important values in life, the me isms.I feel badly for the victim, I feel sorry for the mother s, and [...]

  9. I will read anything by M William Phelps I would rather have read this one rather than listened on audio the fellow wasn t TERRIBLE, but I felt like if I had a grandpa who was also a billy goat that liked to read true crime novels out loud, it would be him.

  10. I would give it a 2 because Phelps repetitious writing drives me nuts, but I had never heard of the Hiccup Girl and was intrigued by the story.

  11. Intriguing true crime story involving a young girl, Jennifer Mee, that had a less than perfect childhood, instant notoriety at a young age hiccuping for weeks with no explanation and then became a prime suspect in a murder The author does a good job of bringing you into the family and trying to get a glimpse of what Jennifer Mee was like as a person I alternated between feeling bad for her and feeling as if she or her lawyer tried to take advantage of her past experience in order to receive a no [...]

  12. One Breath Away is unlike any other true crime story I have read Jennifer Mee, a young girl know for having incurable hiccups accused of setting up a robbery where the target was murdered The story is broken into several parts, Jennifer before she had hiccups, during her having hiccups, after her hiccups, and finally the trial The last part was the most interesting for my be far The first three parts were a bit long with too much fluff.Normally when reading a true crime story there are parts tha [...]

  13. I received this book as part of a giveaway Overall, it was an interesting read although I found it hard to follow initially because it jumped around quite a bit It was also quite repetitive throughout I m wondering what rock I was living under that I had never heard of the Hiccup Girl before reading this book I wanted to shake her mother sometimes for allowing or even encouraging the media coverage I suppose she had good intentions but she must realize she put a step wrong along the way From abo [...]

  14. Great ReadI liked this one, even though it differed from Phelps normal books He, as always, gets as much information as he can about a case He covers all bases, including the suspects, parents, family, friends, the police and legal crews and most importantly, the victim I enjoy reading his books because he includes information about the whole case without including every boring detail I can t wait for his next one

  15. I received a free ARC of this book I liked this book, but didn t love it I found parts to be repetitive especially aspects of the protagonist s lifestyle and family life Other than that, the plot was quick moving, making it an ideal beach read very little thinking involved I wasn t familiar with the story prior to reading the book, and I wish I hadn t googled the outcome It took away from the thriller nature of the events.

  16. A two bit robbery by some gangsta wannabes turns into a homicide when the victim fights back That s about it for nearly 400 pages, so we hear a lot of information two or three times The only reason we re hearing about it at all is because one of the perps was briefly famous for having a severe case of the hiccups The hiccup flashback was actually the most interesting part of this sorry saga.

  17. Has anyone else ever wondered what is up with that weird photograph of M William Phelps on the back cover of all his books It looks like he has a painful hemorrhoid.Anywaydiocre story of a teen girl gone wrong Several several bloated chapters on the various hiccup cures the family tries Lite reading for sure

  18. I loved reading this book I felt sorry for Jennifer but i think she got caught up with the wrong kind of people which led to her demise The author of this book was very detailed in about the crime I feel Sorry for SThe victom and his family This was a great book to read I would probably read it again Excellent trial case.

  19. The first half of this true crime account was a bit dragged out, it could have been a shorter book than 420 pages but as always, M William Phelps writes a compelling true crime story Jennifer Mee definitely got involved with a very messed up boyfriend and is paying dearly for it This book includes an excerpt from the author s new book if You Only Knew , I look forward to reading that one.

  20. DisappointingI had a hard time finishing this book It was just plain boring Save your money and your time I have enjoyed some of mr Phelps earlier books but his writing is going downhill.

  21. I won this book from a first reads giveaway I really enjoyed this book The plot was fast paced, easy to read I found it very interesting how hanging with the wrong crowd can change your life I would recommend this book.

  22. Abandoned It started out fairly interesting, but just went on and on with the same stuff, and nothing new A girl with a low IQ and other issues makes a series of bad choices and ends up in serious trouble Just read the Wiki page on her instead of the whole book.

  23. Very DullThe story was just not interesting A girl with Tourette s draws an acquaintance into an ambush The murderer was bland and impossible to empathize with and the victim was kind of like a superficial afterthought.

  24. UghokI am not the best person I cannot handle typos in a book that gets published and everyone LOVES it and oohs and ahhs about it and i WOULD like to be generous I just wish attention was paid to thisUghgood readd along quickly

  25. Best one yetI believe of all the books Mr Phelps has written, this was my favorite I ve read every book he has written I felt some sympathy for Miss Mee.
