  1. This started off pretty good, with a case where the author tracked down the source of contamination at a hospital She then described how and why she got into this field and told some stories about her part in eliminating small pox in India After that, her stories focused on complaints than adventures The CIA used them as cover for getting into a refuge camp and things like this caused distrust and violence toward later medical detectives The media constantly misquoted or misrepresented her, and [...]

  2. Here s the thing I really, really wanted to love this book It s a memoir of a woman fighting against sexism and elitism and working hard her entire life to better the health lives of people around the world And she tells her story through anecdotes and cases that she worked on Doesn t that sound awesome YES But the delivery isn t there Don t get me wrong, she s amazing and the content of the stories are heartbreaking, and I would love to meet her in real life, but she is NOT a story teller The w [...]

  3. Pretty interesting, but not really what I expected based on the title The stories are about her experiences, but not so much as the medical detective she was I guess I was expecting of the epidemiology aspect of her career The organization of the book is odd as well.

  4. Let s hear it for the girls Excellent info back before females were even allowed to enter med school they struggled and found ways to pursue their dreams of pursuing science chemistry and eventually medicine These stories will leave you just shaking your head Who d a thunk it

  5. While I sincerely appreciate her work and contributions to the public health field, this book epitomizes the classic Public Health Achilles heel, The High Horse I enjoyed her stories but she used this book as a platform to villanize various people and organizations she felt got in her way in protecting public health Again, grateful for her work, but very irritating.

  6. A fascinating look at the challenges of being a woman in a medical field and climate not conducive to her gender.

  7. I believe Mary Guinan, PhD, MD, has paved the way with brilliance and tenacity for female scientists, physicians, and international work This slim volume shares some of her experiences but it isn t very entertaining About cold sores What is the difference between true love and herpes Herpes lasts forever I like to say that I have newscaster Dan Rather and Salt Lake City, UT to thank for steering me toward a career in STDs She had joined the Infections Disease program at the University of Utah in [...]

  8. I had hoped to love this And I did love parts of it especially the medical fieldwork the author did in places like Pakistan and India But as the author s career progressed, the book went on to carry lots of relatively emotionless stories of politics and the media and health It s not that I think those subjects are unworthy I don t The telling of these was just not as compelling Good, but not great.

  9. This was a highly enjoyable, short read from Dr Mary Guinan, former member of the CDC s Epidemic Intelligence Service, key doctor and researcher in the early days of the HIV AIDS epidemic and current dean of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Community Health Sciences It presents little vignettes of her life and experience as one of the CDC s disease detective, starting with her work in helping to eradicate smallpox from rural villages in India in the 1970s, and how she accidentally b [...]

  10. Adventures of a Female Medical Detective recounts a dozen stories from the life of Mary Guinan and makes for quick, compelling reading In the early 1970s, Guinan was the only female member of the Centers for Disease Control s Epidemic Intelligence Service class a two year training in international epidemiology As a woman, she quickly found herself pulled into investigations in regions where interactions between male doctors and female patients were viewed as inappropriate She engaged in epidemio [...]

  11. A phenomenal, fascinating read I picked it up for my professional library which is open to my college students interested in pursuing various health professions including medicine and public health It will definitely be on the summer recommended reading list I share with my students this year Dr Guinan, if when your travels bring you to Michigan, we would LOVE to host you and have a conversation about your career Thank you for all you have done to advance healthcare and to stand up for those who [...]

  12. A very interesting woman I enjoyed hearing about her forging her career path at a time when women were not encouraged to pursue medicine I particularly enjoyed the chapters about her adventures in India as part of a smallpox eradication team However, I was expecting from the book itself It was really a small collection of vignettes, not of them as well written as the initial chapters.

  13. This book was a fascinating look into public health professionals and this lady doctor in particular From inoculating people in India to being one of the first doctors to study HIV, she s led a very interesting life I do think the book s presentation is odd The forward presents the chapters as mysteries when they really aren t s a strange marketing ploy Still, her stories are engaging and worth a read.

  14. I was disappointed by this book it could have been SO much .It was an easy, short, and entertaining read, but I thought that about her medical detective side of things would have been included It was a disjointed series of personal anecdotes that were oddly put together It had a very abrupt ending and seemed like there was little to do editing. The stories were fascinating and could have had meat to them I had so many questions that I didn t get to have answered.

  15. Wonderful book Is one that could have been five hundred pages and still be to short Thank you Mary Guinean for you service to the public and the individuals who have been lucky enough to cross your path.

  16. Very easy to read stories about Dr Guinan s work at the sunset of smallpox and the rise of HIV AIDS that also describes the CDC s approach to controlling infectious disease. The chapters on the early years of HIV research are particularly compelling.

  17. This book does discuss cases, but dwells on CDC s world wide role in diseases I found that very interesting but I think a non medical person would find it a bit dry.

  18. Very interesting book, but not very well written If the topic piques your interested, give it a shot, but just know the writing style is a bit dry and bare bones.

  19. Very short but entertaining book about the author s travels and experiences dealing with infectious diseases Only wish it had been longer.

  20. So ripe for excellence with amazing content and life experiences just really poor execution, writing, and vision for book.

  21. I feel like this couldn t decide whether it wanted to be a book of essays or one over arching memoir I didn t find the abrupt style a particularly good fit, but it was short and easy to read.

  22. It isn t the most well written book you ll ever read, but Dr Guinan is a bad ass and a role model not just for women, but all in the medical field.

  23. This could have been so much than it was The stories were very brief and bare bones surely they could have been detailed And the writing just wasn t that great.

  24. Really enjoyed learning about the background of an MD who worked on public health projects in the US and around the world Good read for anyone considering a career in public health work.
