  1. I really wanted to love this book I lived in the Miami area for many years I used to drive walk past the Mutiny often I know the background a little, but I just found the style of writing did not capture me I may try again, but at this time I cannot complete it I did watch the whole Cocaine Cowboys on Netflix and it was engaging, so I thought this would be too, especially as a reader.

  2. Miami The jewel of the Sunshine State The playground of the rich and famous The city that cocaine built The one time murder capital of the US.Hotel Scarface is the story of Miami in the 1970s and 80s It was a time of redevelopment and growth, in no small part due to the influx of cocaine money It was a time of decadence, crime, and insanity It was a time of drug importers and sellers, movie stars and politicians, cops, some dedicated, others corrupt, lavish hotels with even lavish parties, hook [...]

  3. Cocaine was being promoted as the Dom Perignon of illegal narcotics non habit forming, mind opening, invigorating, high class No less than Thomas Edison thought best under its influence, and Sigmund Freud wrote poems about it Everyone wanted to try cocaine I never thought I d know so much about cocaine Farzad put extensive research into this research about Miami in the 70s and 80s and the characters that shaped a city While this book is character and fact heavy, it remains accessible and reads [...]

  4. Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for the opportunity to read and review Hotel Scarface by Roben Farzad This nonfiction account of 1970 s 1990 s Miami begins with action The book continues, highlighting certain characters of the time and tells everything honestly and boldly I became overwhelmed with the money, drugs, violence and human degradation as I continued to read It s difficult to comprehend that this is reality and people s lives The notes at the end of the book state that [...]

  5. Hotel Scarface is a fascinating book of facts that reads like a Hollywood movie The entire time reading, I was playing scenes of Scarface, The Godfather, Wolf of Wallstreet, and Good Fellas in my mind While I had a little bit of knowledge of the cocaine hustle in Miami, I had no idea how much I actually didn t know This book is chock full of facts, names, places, arrests, you name it At times it was a little hard to follow and remember who was who, but Hotel Scarface was a fascinating read, none [...]

  6. Wm myself a ARC of this offering in a give away A great piece of investigative journalism into the cocaine distribution industry in southern Florida during the seventies, this book brings the television series Miami Vice to life It bring the reader up close to the dealers, hit men, and the hanger ons, including celebrities, who defined the era The story concentrates on the epicenter of the cocaine port of the United States, the Mutiny club on Sailboat bay, and goes on to describe the lavish part [...]

  7. This is an excellent historical summary written in an active prose that reads like a novel The first thing I did after finishing the book was to re watch Scarface The style of writing provides a great deal of information without becoming dry The descriptions of the Coconut Grove area are accurate and detailed In addition to being extremely entertaining, the book can serve as a reference to an interesting and strange time in the history of the United States.

  8. Thoroughly enjoyed Roben s sprawling, detailed, page turning history of Miami s cocaine culture, viewed through the portal of one amazing space in the Grove It s a strange feeling to read it now and wonder what sort of people, drugs, and money were constantly flowing around us while we grew up in South Florida.

  9. Interesting history of the hotel, and by extension some of the characters, behind the Miami drugs scheme in the 70s 80s

  10. Thanks go out to GoodReads and to Berkley Publishing for sending an ARC in exchange for an honest review I always enjoy works that make me want to conduct further research on historical events This book did just that I was about three or four years old when all the events in this book began to take place and I thought the author did a great job of painting a picture of that time, place, and characters.I do agree with another reviewer who noted that, at times, it was difficult to follow some of t [...]

  11. Roben Farzad s Hotel Scarface Where Cocaine Cowboys Partied and Plotted to Control Miami is the story of the rise and fall of the so called Cocaine Cowboys, from their origins to the successful prosecutions The cocaine trade permeated many layers of Miami including in politics and business and also brought violence and corruption The entertainment industry, with shows such as Miami Vice was both influenced by the Cocaine Cowboys but also ended up influencing them as well Although the lasting imp [...]
