  1. I received a copy of this book for free through a First Reads Giveaway. If you are familiar with Cracked magazine and enjoy it, you might enjoy this general overview of vice in history It covers everything from drug use a lot of different types of drug use to sex The humor is sophomoric, which is what you ll find in the magazine, which got tiresome My biggest issue with the book was no bibliography list of cited works The author mentions some of his sources, but not all When reading a book based [...]

  3. Are you looking for a funny, somewhat decently researched book about sex and drugs and trash talking, with some trivia that will impress your friends and step by step guides to getting high like people in ancient times If that is what you seek, then this is the book for you.In contrast to the impression one might get from the title, there is, admittedly with a few exceptions, little information on how the vices explored in the book have formed civilization Sure, Churchill and Stalin, who couldn [...]

  4. An ok but mostly forgettable book It s really just meant to be fun, and that s fine Human vices contributed some things to society, but it s really an exaggeration to say vice built civilization It s just wishful thinking, really The title is like the book version of clickbait It worked, it drew me in, I clicked the link, read the book, and now I feel somewhat had Much of the book is about the author trying to recreate ancient traditional ways of getting fucked up and mostly not exactly succeedi [...]

  5. So, this was written by a guy from Cracked and it reads like a book length Cracked article Which is not a criticism, just a note And beneath all the dick jokes there s a thoughtful book that delves into the role of ritual in the use of illicit substances, how things like music can be a drug and the fact that drinking schnapps with salamander poison can indeed knock you on your butt Funny, interesting and well researched.

  6. Evans is an editor at Cracked, and how much you enjoy this book is closely related to how much you can tolerate their house style The premise is pretty simple, pop science focusing on sex, drugs, and rock and roll, looking at how people in the past got high, and how you can do the same The story moves from primates metabolizing alcohol to ancient brewing, temple prostitution, and then the medical uses of painkillers and MDMA The book closes with an epic quest to find Slovenian Salamander Brandy, [...]

  7. Nope Sorry Not for me This was a straight up chore to get through Felt like a Buzzfeed article Not my jam I received this copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

  8. Robert Evans does not leave anything to pure speculation here If a writer s going to wax about the rituals and particulars of ancient drugs, the writer s going to have to commit to the science A Brief History of Vice chronicles the research, the experience, and the aftermath of every experiment, from taking tobacco through the nose to making energy balls out of butter and coffee to drinking actual human urine It s not just funny it s interesting, and in some ways inspiring Not that I m rushing t [...]

  9. Before reading this I thought vices like drinking or lying were something good people fought to eliminate from their behavior Now I understand how they are a part of evolution and how they have shaped and will continue to shape society.Part historical account of major drugs and vices everything from coffee to kinks , part guide to DIY ing your alcohol or drug, this is a funny and informative book.

  10. This book was wonderful You learn, you laugh, you travel back in time Robert Evans is on that cutting edge of entertaining educationalism Think of it as Hunter S Thompson mixed with Jon Oliver mixed withmeone who s famous for knowing a lot about history.

  11. From the Introduction We literally started building towns and, eventually, cities so that we could throw cooler parties literally really Last sentence, Chapter 5 How Bad Behaviour Saved Civilisation A douchebag lives in all of us, coded into our very genes And we all owe that fuck wind a great debt This book lists a series of vices , examines them briefly, states that we are genetically structured to indulge in those vices, and that our civilisation developed as a result of that indulgence In th [...]

  12. A Brief History of Vice is a short look at the history of many vices Each chapter focuses on a specific vice , which may be as broad as the practice of prostitution or as specific as the much rud salamander brandy of Slovenia Each chapter describes the vice in question and looks at how it originated and how it existed in ancient societies, usually focusing on how the vice in question helped build those societies Often this means discussing how the vice was incorporated into rituals, religion, th [...]

  13. Evans book makes some interesting observations about how behavior that we characterize as vices have their roots in pro social behavior Far from being concerned explicitly with drugs and alcohol, the book also addresses antisocial behavior, like knocking people down a peg so they don t get too full of themselves Overall, it s a witty, lively book with a couple of fun recipes thrown in from the author s own attempts to re create some of the antediluvian drugs research within.I m a little sad that [...]

  14. I found this by pure chance and decided to give it a go I m not sorry The description of the book reads Guns, germs, and steel might have transformed us from hunter gatherers into modern man, but booze, sex, trash talk, and tripping built our civilization Cracked editor Robert Evans brings his signature dogged research and lively insight to uncover the many and magnificent ways vice has influenced history, from the prostitute turned empress who scored a major victory for women s rights to the be [...]

  16. In A Brief History of Vice, author Robert Evans takes us on a merry little journey through history and prehistory where he highlights how some of mankind s oldest degenerate behavior have helped us evolve into the civilization we are today Evans writes about the evolution of society through the development of booze, drugs, foot fetishes, and other things that the morally uptight like to shake their heads at Even better, the book has recipes Want to try the first beer The first coffee Pre Columbi [...]

  17. So, maybe I rated the book so low and wanted to rate it even lower was due to two major mistakes within the book One was calling Sultan Murad IV the King of Persia, an area the Ottoman Empire never ruled and calling Istanbul by it s former name of Constantinople, this is the equivalent of me calling Washington the Prime Minister of Mexico and telling stories of him wandering around New Amsterdam The second was called the Balkan states the Baltic states This caused me to question the entire quali [...]

  18. I regularly read Robert Evans columns on Cracked, so I was pretty sure I knew what I was in for It s a very funny read, but I think he greatly overstates the role vice played in the development of early human societies I would highly recommend this book to those interested in studying cultural anthropology or looking to enrich their knowledge of early human civilization If you are already familiar with the topic, however, you may find yourself disagreeing with much of what Evans says I d give th [...]

  19. Enjoy your vices, but respect them too That s the general gist of the book, which was an interesting journey through human vices This historical ish text examines vices booze, drugs, prostitution, etc and explores its history and development The author engages in many of them firsthand so we don t have to, which is definitely a good thing in some cases As a history teacher, it was an enjoyable read and provided some color to our history, but it also wasn t quite worth 4 stars It s a great topic [...]

  20. The anecdotes are interesting but the author doesn t even properly cite his sources and or have a bibliography I also didn t appreciate how he purported the continued false statement that Francis Crick and other men discovered the DNA double helix supposedly from being high AF, according to Evans when it s been revealed that Crick s discovery is in large part due to Rosalind Franklin s research Like don t write false statements that you can t even properly cite

  21. I loved this book And no I haven t read Cracked previously I learned stuff and actually laughed out loud several times There is a lot of history here, but not what we usually learn The author makes some really interesting points of how our vices have contributed to building civilization Also, several examples of how animals display similar vices And I loved reading about all of his experiments.

  22. weeeeelll, this was pretty much a bit of history sprinkled into what are some off tempo drugs like.I think Adam from that show myth busters said something about the difference between fucking around and science is writing it down.well this guy wrote it all down, so I guess its scienceso he really sold me on acid i mean i probably still wont check it out, but i m a lot closer to it than I was.

  23. It was all OK until the book talked about 4th Murad Since I am Turkish I already knew about him and his hatred towards tobacco but in the book Robert Evans said he was Persian and in the next page he said he was wondering in constantinople in 1600s MAaaaan get your shit together D Anyways it is a good book to point you to some really nice researches, articles Give it a go.

  24. Humor, fun facts, and recipes galore Evan s brought so many topics to the table in this history on vice From the expected coffee, shrooms, and drinks to thoughtful consideration to music and sex I appreciated his light, personal voice as he shared his own experiences and witty recipes throughout

  25. This is very clearly a book by an author who also writes for Cracked and if you don t like that humor, you won t like this book. For the most part, this is a light hearted version of Guns, Germs and Steel interesting but forgettable.

  26. If you like Cracked and like learning about vice you ll like this book If you re looking for something actually scientific historical read something else.
