  1. Fun little book, 5 stars because it achieves what it sets out to do, it is entertaining, it is full of arcane historical knowledge and promotes you to look at history closely I had fun reading all of this previously I know facts about history , the chapters are short therefore you can breeze through this book, if you want a fast paced book , know factoids and love historyis book is for you.

  2. themaineedge style delAs a rule, much of our understanding of history comes in terms of broad strokes The reality is that history is so vast and sprawling, we can t help but wind up with gaps in our knowledge Some of us might have of these holes than others, but we ve all got them. That s what makes Giles Milton s History s Unknown Chapters series so fascinating Milton collects those overlooked moments and relates them in an engaging, accessible fashion, offering glimpses at the finer, oft forgo [...]

  3. This is a collection of short, uncontextualized or further explained anecdotes WWII anthrax experiments, the Chevalier d Eon was a Man The madness of George III, Stalin was an anarchist bank robber, etc I m not sure who these would surprise or whose mind would be blown, but this is an inoffensive collection in the vein of the Book of Lists or Bathroom readers.

  4. I listened to this on audiobook An interesting collection of snippets from history Some of the topics covered were familiar to me, others, only a little and quite a few not at all I like books like these, as they are like historical samplers if a topic catches your attention, you can then choose to look up detailed accounts elsewhere later What this book does is presented very interesting fragments to whet the appetite for history fans.

  5. I love both this and the first book in the History s Unknown Chapters duo Very consumable and interesting history tidbits that make for fast reading or listening I listened to the audio.

  6. Milton compiles a selection of little known historical facts and greater context for other historical events.

  7. This book is a collection of brief tales about little known events in history For example, it is about an academic paper that claims George III had bipolar disorder another that Stalin was poisoned I found the two stories most interesting and they had information that was new to me The first one was about Witold Pilecki, a reporter, who broke into and out of Auschwitz, but in 1943 no one would believe his reports about the death camp The other was about Mati Hari and the claims of her innocence [...]

  8. Three hundred pages of common knowledge.Mata Hari was a dancer and a spy.George III was insane because of a mental illness no, seriously, that s how thr book goes Hindenburg explodedBokassa was a tyrant and so on.Maybe a couple of good stories can not compensate for the insipidity of the rest.

  9. It s a sedate, if glorified, bathroom reader of historical vignettes There doesn t seem to be much in the way of a connecting theme, and some of the entries are actually too brief to be truly effective An easy, quick, and unremarkable read.

  10. Short chapters chronicling history s oddities, grisly at times, but quite informative Will read other collections by Milton, in the hopes of additional weird factoids.

  11. Loved these short little history vignettes A great read before bed considering I pass out after 3 pages or so.

  12. I won this book through A great collection of fun and quirky history tidbits Extremely entertaining Loved it.

  13. Writing very prosaic, but definitely fascinating tidbits from history Interesting enough that I intend to seek out some of Mr Milton s other works.

  14. This was another fun history book It s got some cool vignettes in there that really add to an armchair historian s knowledge.

  15. ha ha ha ha haI like this book than I can admit Terutama di bab sejarah mengapa lukisan Monalisa menjadi terkenal alias overrated.

  16. The first collection was stronger I binge read it so fast, but this one seems.different or lacking in ways Yes, there is still a lot of information that I didn t know but it was somewhat less entertaining than the first one The second half of the book did pick up a little, but it still only manages a 3 star rating.

  17. Quick read This was a neat book of short history stories Most of them I had never heard about before but what was even nicer than these short interesting stories, was that the author clearly left further reading material for each story at least 2 to 3 resources. The only drawback was that he mainly focuses on WWII stories but, not always wish there was of a theme or cohesion

  18. Interesting and short historical oddities, arranged for the most part in categories of three or four stories, with a quote to introduce each category This is actually two books in one, When Churchill Slaughtered Sheep and When Stalin Robbed a Bank Most of these were, indeed, unknown to me one I d just read in another book and was so familiar I wondered if it was duplicated in this one Some were interesting than others, but because they were short it didn t suffer too much from their inclusion.I [...]

  19. A wonderful book for history buffs I learned a lot about history that I had never heard of The best part is that it is all, short chapters, so it s perfect if you re on the go

  20. Exactly what it says on the tin a collection of underappreciated biographical chapters from history, with a bias towards Brits, Nazis, and the people around Stalin The quality is popular, but without egregious errors Think a serious version of a Cracked listicle I actually have a pretty good opinion of Cracked, aside from the house style Since I listened to this on audiobook, Mr Milton is an enthusiastic and pleasant narrator, who really brings these stories to life On the other hand, there s n [...]

  21. I won this book in a contest One of my passions as a reader happens to be obscure history, the tales that people have tried to hide over time This little book is full of them, and at about 3 or 4 pages a story, is the perfect entertaining bathroom book I highly recommend this fun little excursion.

  22. Being legally blind, I use two different technologies to read Slow, yes Frustrating, definitely This is a book of history that most likely is unknown to a lot of people It was interesting.

  23. Another set of interesting historical stories from Milton The book is a great way to have fun reading about historical affairs, especially if you re in a hurry Each story is about 4 pages at most, after all.

  24. I enjoyed this book The first one was better I did know a lot of the stories in this one but there were details I didn t already know I m glad I read this and will look forward to his next collection of stories.

  25. I received this book as a giveaways It is a collection of obscure, shot, historic stories I enjoyed it very much.
