I love how Jan Mark does so many subtle things in even the simplest of her stories Under the Autumn Garden perfectly captures the experience of growing up in a Norfolk village in the seventies I know because I was there her ear for the accent and speech rhythms, and for the slow, bone dry Norfolk wit is unparalleled But there s so much in this book it s an exploration of children s relationship with history, a portrayal of the emotions involved in childhood friendship and fallings out, the dawn [...]

This book has amazingly little plot Matthew decides to dig for historical artefacts rather than get on with his history homework And that s it, really There are some nice humorous touches here and there, and a delightful character in the form of his crusty neighbour, Mr Bagnall But other than that, rather tedious.
